The summer of 1997 was 25 years ago.

That's the summer I downloaded my first MP3.
My MP3 story started there. Before that story ended a few years later, I
had met people around the world, was offered my first beer at a
convention in California, and lived through a dot-com bust. What's your
story? As the years pass, those faces, nicknames, stories, controversies, websites, chatrooms, and chatroom friends get more and more distant from instant recollection. They say the Internet is forever - but we know better. We know that entire generations of the web have been lost to time. We've seen it. So let's tell our story.
Let's collect what can still be collected. Let's dig
through the files, papers, disks, discs, pictures and memories that
we still have. We lived this. We were there. We did and saw things
that people take for granted now. Some of us built the future. Some
of us cheered it on. What did it mean to you then? What does it mean
to you now? How did it shape you? What else did you go on to do?
What would you do differently? What do you regret? Tell your story.
No one will tell it for us.
I'm collecting the stories and artifacts of the MP3 web scene. I don't know where it will take me or what will become of it just yet. I just know that one of us should try.
